Singing with Courage Journal exercise about seasons of mastery for the guitarist and singer

You know the song. Your body forgets it.

Stage anxiety can make a prepared singer feel like a beginner in seconds. It does not mean you lack talent or commitment. It means the moment matters to you—and you need a better way to meet it.

  • Your heart starts racing before the first note.
  • Your hands shake and your breath becomes shallow.
  • You forget lyrics you knew minutes earlier.
  • You compare yourself with performers who seem fearless.
  • You avoid chances to sing, then regret staying silent.

Fear does not get to choose whether you sing.

The goal is not to become fearless. The goal is to sing anyway.

What Joni Mitchell did when the crowd would not listen

At the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, Joni Mitchell faced a restless crowd, disruption and visible strain. She did not erase the discomfort. She addressed the room, returned to the music and turned confrontation into connection.

That moment sits at the centre of this book: sensitivity is not evidence that you should leave the stage. It can become part of what makes the performance matter.

“It really had me thinking about my stage anxiety and singing in front of others from a different perspective. It helped me create an action plan—and reminded me that I was in good company.”
Ben Amoz · Reader of the book and journal

I used to be petrified to sing and play. Now I teach other women.

I used to be petrified to sing and play in front of other people—even family. With time, practice and inspiration, I began doing the very thing that frightened me.

Today, I teach other women how to sing and play. It has been wonderfully freeing! Music is something I can share, and helping another woman take that step means so much to me.

I did not write Sing Anyway to tell you to stop feeling nervous. I wrote it to help you prepare, respond and remain connected to the music when the nerves arrive.

This book grew from my own experience of learning Joni Mitchell’s music—the hours spent with her songs, the courage I found in her performances, and the discoveries I made with a guitar in my hands. Her music inspired me to keep singing when fear told me to stop. Sing Anyway is my way of sharing what I learned, in the hope that it helps another woman find the courage to begin.

With gratitude, Avigail
